It is suggested that there are two parts to the mythos, the first in which Tiamat is a creator goddess, through a "Sacred marriage" between salt and fresh water, peacefully creating the cosmos through successive generations. She is portrayed as either a sea serpent or a dragon. She is also a Earth Mother Goddess though her title has been forgotten. She is the symbol of the chaos of primordial creation, depicted as a woman, she represents the beauty of the feminine, depicted as the glistening one. She mated her lover Abzu, the Primordial god of fresh water, to produce younger deities of the pantheon. She is "Ummu-Hubu r who formed all things". She and Apsu filled the cosmic abyss with the primeval waters. Tiamat was the "shining" personification of salt water who roared and smote in the chaos of original creation.
